CARLSBAD (CNS) - A 48-year-old man was killed early Friday in an accident involving a tractor-trailer at the North County flower-distribution warehouse where he worked.

Arturo Cuellar of Oceanside was standing behind the big rig on a loading dock at the distribution center on Kellogg Avenue in Carlsbad shortly after midnight, preparing to help unload a shipment from Florida, when the vehicle lurched backward, according to police and the county Medical Examiner's Office.

The doors of the trailer hit Cuellar in the head, knocking him to the ground, where he apparently struck the back of his head. Co-workers called 911 and aided the stricken man prior to the arrival of paramedics, who tried in vain to revive him before pronouncing him dead at the scene.

A cause-of-death ruling was on hold pending autopsy results.

The cause of the accident was under investigation.
