LA County fire 60 percent contained

Posted: Updated:

CASTAIC, Calif. (AP) — Firefighters on Saturday are hoping to fully contain a 500-acre brush fire in northern Los Angeles County that forced the temporary closure of parts of Interstate 5.

Authorities initially had said the fire, which is 60 percent contained, had charred about 650 acres but revised the figure overnight.

The blaze started shortly after 1 p.m. Friday in a fairly remote area near Castaic, but threatened no homes. Some 300 hundred firefighters worked in rugged, hilly terrain and aided by water drops from three helicopters.

No injuries or damages have been reported.

Northbound lanes were temporarily closed on the key artery in and out of Los Angeles. One lane remains closed.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
