SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two people were injured and two others were displaced Saturday when a car crashed into a North Park apartment building, according to San Diego police and fire officials.

A 2008 Kia sedan, driven by an about 60-year-old man, crashed through a wood fence at 1810 Upas, travelled about 50 feet down an embankment and broke through a tree, according San Diego police Officer Ray Battrick.

The car then rolled over and hit the Canyon Wood Apartments building at Upas Street and Park Boulevard shortly before 11:30 a.m., Battrick said.

Fire personnel extricated the vehicle's two occupants from the wreckage, according to a San Diego Fire-Rescue Department dispatcher.

The driver sustained a major head injury and a severe injury to his hand. The female passenger sustained a back injury and both were taken to a hospital, Battrick said. No one inside the building was injured.

Eight adults were initially evacuated from 12 of the building's units and a building engineer was called in, the dispatcher said.

Most of the residents were allowed to return to their homes, however two remained displaced, the dispatcher said.

Two units at 1830 Upas were damaged and deemed uninhabitable until further inspection. Two others had their gas turned off, Battrick said.
