SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A planned power outage led to an apartment fire near downtown.

It happened at a complex on the corner of 1st Avenue and Hawthorn Street.

The fire started in a downstairs apartment when a lit candle fell over on a bed. When fire fighters got to the scene they saw two people trapped on the 2nd floor.

They quickly rescued them through a window using a ladder.

"They were at the windows. The crews quickly recognized they needed assistance getting down they threw a ladder and quickly assisted the victims down via ladder," David Connor of the SDFD said.

One victim suffered smoke inhalation, but both are doing fine.

The fire was quickly put out and didn't spread to any nearby units.
