ESCONDIDO (CNS) - Police officers looking for a gunman in Escondido found a teenager allegedly drunk driving instead, an Escondido Police Department dispatcher said.
Officers heard five gunshots near 13th and Maple streets about 10 p.m. Saturday. A local resident also heard the shots and reported them to 911, the dispatcher said.
Police investigated the area but did not find a victim, gunman or shell casings, the Escondido Police Department watch commander said.
During the investigation, officers pulled over a driver that they thought might have some information, the dispatcher said. The driver stopped for a few seconds, sped off, then stopped a second time and ran away from the car.
The 19-year-old Escondido man was caught and jailed on suspicion of drunken driving and evading police, he said.
