SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The city of San Diego will retain outside lawyers to defend itself against lawsuits by women who say they were abused by a former police officer, who was convicted of multiple counts of sexual battery, the City Attorney's Office announced Tuesday.

The action was authorized on a 6-2 vote by the City Council in closed session, with council members Carl DeMaio and Kevin Faulconer voting "no."

A dozen lawsuits have been filed against former San Diego police Officer Anthony Arevalos, who was imprisoned for almost nine years, and the city. The plaintiffs are victims who appeared at trial and others who have come forward.

At the time of sentencing, Judge Jeffrey Fraser said the ex-officer used the power of his badge to violate women.

Arevalos, an 18-year SDPD veteran, was fired after the allegations came to light last March that he tried to make deals with women he stopped, and sexually assaulted three of them.

Most of the stops in question were for driving under the influence and happened between September 2009 and March 2011 in downtown San Diego.

The dozen lawsuits involving Arevalos were filed in both Superior and federal courts.
