SAN DIEGO (CNS) - More than 7,000 spectators flocked to NTC Park at Liberty Station Saturday to watch some 4,000 participate in the third annual Philip Rivers 5K Walk and Fun Run.
The race was held to benefit the Rivers of Hope Foundation, a charity that assists foster children sponsored by the Chargers quarterback and wife Tiffany. Since it was founded in 2010, the foundation granted more than $1 million to local foster care organizations, according to event officials.
"My wife, Tiffany, and I are overwhelmed by all of the support shown by San Diegans," Rivers said. "The turn out today far exceeded our expectations. We understand that not everyone can adopt a child or donate money. But, everyone can tell someone about these children that need forever homes," he said.
Luis De La Vega, 26, finished the race in 16 minutes and 14 seconds to take first for the second time. De La Vega was followed by Leon Medina and Juan Mendoza.
Mercy Ray, 30, was the top female finisher with a time of 17 minutes, 48 seconds. She was followed by Jennifer Perrottet and Maggie Paola.
Rivers shaved one minute off last year's time to finish the race in 26 minutes, 10 seconds, officials said.
