Brush fire in Mission Valley prompts I-15 closures

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A two-alarm fire broke out along the side of Interstate 15 Sunday in Mission Valley, prompting officers to close two northbound lanes, according to the California Highway Patrol and the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

The fire near the exit to Friars Road was reported about 12:30 p.m. according to the CHP and fire personnel.

A San Diego Fire-Rescue Department dispatcher said the vegetation fire had a moderate rate of spread and structures were threatened, however evacuations had not been ordered.

As of 1:08 p.m. firefighters had the blaze 60-70 percent contained, a dispatcher said. The head of the fire had been knocked down and firefighters were working to contain the sides, she said, adding crews would likely remain on scene for about 90 minutes.

The fire continued to smolder in between two housing tracts and followed a ravine headed east, the CHP reported.

The two right lanes on the northbound side of the freeway were closed in Murphy Canyon, just north of Friars Road, the CHP said.
