Sunrise Powerlink switched on

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - After years of construction and controversy, SDG&E's Sunrise Powerlink has been switched on and is now pumping electricity into San Diego County.

The 500,000 volt transmission line was switched on around 4 a.m. Sunday.

The 117-mile Sunrise Powerlink stretches from San Diego's east county to Imperial Valley and provides San Diego County with a reliable source of renewable energy.

"The Sunrise Powerlink will increase our capability to import power into the region by about 800 megawatts instantaneously," President/CEO of SDG&E, Mike Niggli said.

"So this is a very, very big step for San Diego in terms of ensuring reliable power supply here in San Diego."

With the San Onofre nuclear power plant down for most of the summer, SDG&E says the Sunrise Powerlink will make sure San Diego has enough reliable power to avoid "brown-outs."
