LAKESIDE, Calif. (AP) - The U. S. Forest Service wants to kill hundreds of wild pigs living and multiplying in San Diego County's backcountry. Several options are listed in a plan now open for public comment.
Officials see the pigs as a threat to fragile Cleveland National Forest ecosystems and to public health and safety.
The U-T San Diego says six years ago, a member of the Barona Band of Mission Indians was trying to start a hunting program when he released as many as 40 domestically raised Russian pigs behind El Capitan Reservoir.
Options in the federal eradication plan, which could cost millions, include trapping, hunting by helicopter and hunting on the ground with dogs.
Officials say the pigs are spread over 600,000 acres from Palomar Mountain to the U.-S.-Mexico border.
