SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 24-year-old San Diego man was killed in a fiery single-vehicle crash on Interstate 8, the California Highway Patrol reported Saturday.

The man was headed west in the freeway's fast lane, west of Waring Road, about 8:35 p.m. Friday when for unknown reasons his vehicle veered to the left, struck the median then a steel sign post, according to the CHP.

The driver was trapped in the vehicle and a passer-by tried unsuccessfully to pull him to safety before the vehicle burst into flames, the CHP said.

The vehicle became fully engulfed in flames, the CHP said. Firefighters extinguished the flaming vehicle, but the driver died from his injuries, the CHP said, adding the crash remained under investigation.
