Hundreds of military families celebrate Christmas in June

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - More than 650 members of families that had military members on deployment last December gathered in Murphy Canyon Monday for the sixth annual "Christmas You Missed."

The three-hour event at the San Diego Armed Services YMCA featured Christmas trees, snow, craft activities, cookie decorating and other holiday fare, along with a ceremony honoring 10 babies born while at least one of their parents was deployed.

Thousands of San Diego-based sailors and Marines were deployed last Christmas.

"The holidays are a time to be with loved ones," said Paul Steffens, executive director of the Armed ServicesYMCA. "Christmas You Missed helps give service members a second chance to gain those irreplaceable memories, while also honoring their service."

Some of those celebrating arrived just in time. Nearly 4,000 sailors and Marines returned to San Diego late last week from a seven-month deployment. They are part of Camp Pendleton's 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit and the amphibious ready group led by the USS Makin Island.

The guided-missile cruiser USS Mobile Bay, along with guided-missile destroyers USS Dewey, USS Kidd, USS Wayne E. Meyer and USS Pinckney, returned from a seven-month deployment in February. The aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson, guided-missile cruiser USS Bunker Hill and guided-missile destroyer USS

Halsey returned in May after nearly six months away.
