SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - It was an unbelievable sight about 13 miles off the San Diego coast Saturday. A unique research vessel literally flipped right in the ocean.

Our News 8 crew went out to sea to capture the big event. The name of the vessel is FLIP, which stands for Floating Instrument Platform, and it's celelbrating its 50th anniversary this year.

Built by the Navy and operated by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, FLIP flips 90 degress to become a stable, floating research vessel. It gives scientists the opporutnity to study everything about the ocean.

"From an oceanographic and engineering point of view, FLIP is truly one of a kind. There are no other floating instrument platforms like this anywhere in the world," said Scripps Director Tony Haymet, PhD.
