SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - An East County family is mourning the death of a dedicated bike rider, killed in a grueling competition.

Forty-two-year-old Nic Grossi was one of 400 riders taking part in a 155 mile long ride near Fresno called Climb to Kaiser. Grossi lost control while riding down a steep hill and hit a tree.

His wife Jennifer says he started riding two years ago and it changed his life.

"He started doing it to get back in shape. He lost over 100 pounds," said Jennifer. "Not many people can say the person they loved and lost died completely happy, and I know he did."

Grossi leaves behind his wife and four children.
