Water Main break causes traffic issues near airport

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A 16-inch water main has broken within the perimeter of Lindbergh Field and is causing traffic issues around the airport.  Lindbergh Airport Operations says the break was reported around 3:00 pm Saturday. The flooding is not affecting landings or take-offs.

The flooding has caused the closing of westbound West Laurel St. between Pacific Hwy. & N. Harbor Dr. The shutdown is keeping some passengers from getting to their flights, and clogging traffic in the area.  Authorities recommend accessing Lindbergh Field from the west, via Nimitz Blvd. at N. Harbor Dr. There's no word yet on what caused the water main break, but was likely due to old age.

The water flow/spill is planned to  be shut off right around 7pm Saturday night.   Repairs may take until late Sunday morning to fix. Workers expect to re-open the street intersections by the airport as soon as possible.

Meanwhile the airport has set up a temporary shuttle service for pedestrian passengers at Laurel & Pacific Hwy.
