Suspect in '88 Kidnap, Murder Arrested

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who remained a high-priority fugitive for nearly 24 years after he allegedly took part in the kidnapping and murder of a woman in San Diego was arrested Friday in Mexico, authorities reported.

Vincent Legrend Walters, one of the U.S. Marshals Service's "15 Most Wanted" outstanding suspects, was taken into custody Friday in Cancun, according to the federal law enforcement agency.

Investigators recently determined that Walters, 45, was living in the Yucatan Peninsula city under the alias of Oscar Rivera and working at Cancun International Airport.

Walters will face extradition back to San Diego, where he is wanted for the September 1988 abduction and murder of a woman he allegedly took hostage in an attempt to force a fellow drug dealer to turn over a disputed stash of methamphetamine.

The victim, Christina Reyes, died when she was gagged with a chemically saturated rag that killed her almost instantaneously, according to federal authorities.

Walters' brother, Martin, was caught soon after the crime and was convicted of Reyes' kidnapping and murder. He is serving 25 years to life in prison.

Vincent Walters also was indicted by a federal grand jury in 1989 on conspiracy to manufacture, possess and distribute methamphetamine, carrying firearms during a drug-trafficking crime and possession of unregistered firearms and explosives.
