SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego-area police were on the lookout Saturday for a man, dubbed the "Be Cool" bandit, suspected of robbing at least nine businesses in San Diego, National City and El Cajon since May.

Police believed the suspect was responsible for a three-month series of commercial robberies, that included four San Diego robberies, four in National City and one in El Cajon, according to San Diego police Lt. Andra Brown.

Police nicknamed the suspect the "Be Cool" bandit after he told a clerk in a National City robbery to "be cool," U-T San Diego reported.

Surveillance video captured the robber's image just before the latest robbery, which was about 5:40 a.m. Wednesday, when the suspect allegedly held up a 76 Gas Station at 3252 University Ave., Brown said.

The suspect approached a clerk with a black semi-automatic handgun and demanded cash. He walked out of the store with an undisclosed amount and was last seen driving a light-colored sedan north on Bancroft Street, Brown said.

The suspect was generally described as a black man between 28 and 40 years old, who was between 5-foot-8 and 6 feet tall with a muscular to heavy build. He wore a dark beanie cap, and in most of the robberies he had on a heavy black jacket with a hood and a gray lining, black and white athletic shoes and dark gloves.

He was also described as having a dark complexion and a flat nose. In one case, a victim told police the suspect was missing two upper teeth.

Police asked anyone with information on the "Be Cool" bandit to call the San Diego Police Department's Robbery Unit at (619) 531-2299 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
