Two boys killed in I-15 car crash identified

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities released the names Monday of two boys from San Diego who died over the weekend in a North County freeway crash.

Latrelle Pearson, 10, and 9-year-old Xavier Williams were among seven passengers in a 2002 Dodge Caravan that collided with a 2008 Scion on southbound Interstate 15 near Escondido about 2:30 p.m. Sunday, according to the California Highway Patrol and county Medical Examiner's Office.

The minivan spun out and overturned north of Deer Springs Road. Latrelle, who was unrestrained, was thrown onto the roadway, while Xavier, who was wearing a seat belt, was partially ejected. Both boys died at the scene.

The driver of the Caravan, 52-year-old Roy Ruffin Jr. of San Diego, suffered minor injuries, CHP public-affairs Officer Chris Parent said. Medics took him and four of his other passengers to hospitals for evaluation and treatment.

The driver of the Scion, Temecula resident Lisa Wehus, 24, was uninjured. She was able to drive her damaged car onto a center median, Parent said.

The exact cause of the accident was unclear, but it apparently involved an attempted lane change on the part of one of the two motorists, according to Parent.
