CAMPO (CNS) - A wildfire that blackened nearly 1,000 acres, destroyed a home and threatened scores of others while spreading through southeastern San Diego County over the past three days is now fully contained.

The so-called Old Fire, which erupted Sunday near Old Highway 80 and Miller Valley Road in the Campo area, was 90 percent contained by early Wednesday afternoon, and all those living in the roughly 200 residences evacuated due to the blaze had been allowed to return to their homes, according to Cal Fire.

The blaze destroyed a house and a recreational vehicle while spreading over backcountry terrain east of Pine Valley. Two firefighters suffered minor heat exhaustion while working the lines. No other injuries were reported.

There were no more flames in the 995-acre burn area as of 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, only smoldering hot spots, Cal Fire Capt. Mike Mohler said.

High winds and dry air made controlling the blaze extra difficult, particularly on Tuesday, when the dicey conditions prompted the National Weather Service to issue a "red flag" wildfire-hazard warning, according to Mohler.

How the fire started has not been determined.
