A U.S. border inspector in San Diego was arrested Friday and accused of accepting bribes including thousands in cash, use of luxury cars and apartment rent payments from two people he allegedly allowed to drive past him with illegal immigrants in their car.

SAN DIEGO (AP) - A U.S. border inspector accused of taking bribes from immigrant smugglers has been ordered jailed without bond in San Diego.

U-T San Diego says a federal judge ruled Monday that Hector Rodriguez and two other people should have no chance of being released pending a Thursday hearing. A prosecutor argued that they were flight risks.

Rodriguez was arrested last week while working at the San Ysidro port of entry. Federal prosecutors say he allowed Gerardo Rodriguez and Vanessa Moya to drive hundreds of illegal immigrants through his border station in exchange for thousands in cash, use of luxury cars and apartment rent payments.

The three are charged with conspiracy and smuggling.
