CHULA VISTA (CNS) - Two young men accused in the fatal shooting of another young man in Chula Vista must stand trial on murder and other charges, a judge ruled Wednesday.
Karim Alvarez, 20, and David Chavoya, 18, are charged in the March 14 slaying of 20-year-old Jimmy Rodriguez. The victim was found with multiple gunshot wounds outside Bobar Liquor at 600 F St. around 9 p.m., according to Chula Vista police Capt. Gary Wedge.
The Chula Vista Police Department's Crimes of Violence Unit later identified Alvarez and Chavoya as suspects in the slaying, and they were arrested March 26 in Mexico by the San Diego Fugitive Task Force and Mexican authorities.
A motive was not disclosed, but Wedge said both suspects are believed to have gang associations.
Alvarez is charged with murder, gang allegations and personal use of a fireman. He is also charged with committing a crime while out on bail awaiting sentencing on another case and faces 62 years to life in prison if convicted, according to Deputy District Attorney David Grapilon.
Chavoya is charged with murder along with gang and firearm allegations and faces 60 years to life behind bars if found guilty, the prosecutor said.
South Bay Superior Court Judge Edward Allard III, who presided over the preliminary hearing, ruled that enough evidence was presented to warrant a trial for the defendants.
Arraignment was set for Aug. 2.
