Escondido man allegedly kidnaps mom, girlfriend and leads cops on chase

ESCONDIDO (CBS 8) – A pursuit suspect is in custody after leading police on a chase through residential streets of Escondido, hours after allegedly kidnapping his mother and girlfriend.

The intense police pursuit began more than five hours earlier with 29-year-old Emmanuel Cedano threatening his mother and his 30-year-old girlfriend during a dispute, according to Escondido Police.

"Emmanuel Cedano went over to his mother's apartment and was acting very paranoid and erratic with his girlfriend," says Escondido Police Lt. Chris Wynn.

Cedano left after a verbal argument, but returned several hours later and became physically combative, says Wynn.

"He at one point put his hands on his mother's throat and choked her," Wynn said.

Police say Cedano then kidnapped his mother and his girlfriend, ordering them into a '92 Nissan Pathfinder.

Wynn added, "He forced his mother to drive. It was a stick shift. She wasn't experienced at driving a stick, so she stalled the vehicle."

While Cedano's mother fled on foot and called 911, Cedano jumped behind the wheel and took off north on Center City Parkway, holding his girlfriend hostage.

Shortly before 6:30p.m. an alert patrol officer spotted the Pathfinder, speeding through neighborhood streets at about 60 miles per hour.

According to scanner traffic, Cedano was throwing objects out of the driver's side window as he drove. Moments after those objects were ditched, officers stopped and apprehended Cedano and freed his girlfriend, who was unharmed.

It is unclear what Cedano discarded from the vehicle as he tried to elude capture.

Police say that Cedano's mother suffered minor injuries after her son allegedly choked her.
