Motorcycle crash in Rancho Santa Fe, kills passenger, injures driver

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 49-year-old female passenger of a motorcycle was killed, and the male driver was seriously injured, when their motorcycle crashed in Rancho Santa Fe, the CHP said Sunday.

The dead woman's name has not been released, but the driver was identified by the CHP as William Jimenez, 58, of Escondido.

The pair was headed north on Via De Fortuna near El Camino del Norte about 10:25 p.m. Saturday. For an unknown reason, Jimenez veered the bike off the roadway and crashed into several trees and a wooden fence, CHP officer Jim Bettencourt said.

The passenger died at the scene and Jimenez was taken to Scripps La Jolla Hospital with major injuries, he said.

Investigators suspected that alcohol played a factor in the fatal crash, according to Bettencourt. The relationship between Jimenez and his passenger was not released.
