The 3-Day is coming in November! And for the second time of two this summer, the good folks at New Balance in Cardiff put on a clinic Saturday, July 28, for anyone walking in the 3-Day - followed by a training walk of about 7 miles. With these training walks, first things first. I signed in, as did all of the participants in the morning, then got my beads (those help with the walking). Next was a stop in the New Balance store in Cardiff to check and see what was new since the last training walk six weeks ago. They have great stuff in that New Balance store - and great advice for walkers of all distances.
A wonderful morning for everyone who showed up today! Here's Stacy, with the 3-Day, who is introducing me to the group. There must have been 70 people who RSVP'd to come out for this 7-mile training walk this morning, and they looked like they were ready to get to the action.
My chance to address the group that assembled for Saturday's training walk. There were many first-time 3-Day walkers that showed up this morning, which is always GREAT to see! In addition, the group seemed to appreciate that I had total control of the weather this morning and was able to make sure the cloudy skies kept them comfortable. (Later, of course, they'd be under the sun, but it was working at the moment.) Also I reminded them that the staff at the New Balance had great tips and info - which has helped keep ME blister-free both on the training walks and through both 3-Days I've walked.
Before getting into the walk - it's all about the stretching. Last year's 3-Day I had a little problem with my left knee on Day 3, and I think it might have been because I was not stretching enough on Day 1. So one of the things you must do before a walk (even a training walk like this one) is to stretch!
This gives you some idea of the scenery along our walk, as we went right by the "Cardiff Kook" both going south to Solana Beach - and back to the New Balance store in Cardiff. The gal in the front with the wide brimmed hat was our training walk leader this morning, and she kept us on schedule - and on the road - safely. Many thanks to the Komen 3-Day volunteers who helped out this morning!
And what a great day for a training walk! I got to walk with the dozens of other 3-Day participants along the 101 in Cardiff and Solana Beach - under mostly cloudy skies. To start. Then the sun came out, which is a great reminder that you'll want to have your sunscreen available whether you are walking 7 miles or just going outside for awhile. The current weather pattern is for these low clouds to move on fast - so the cool morning and latent sunshine made for a great training walk Saturday.
