Riverside County brush fire blamed on motorized equipment

Posted: Updated:

MURRIETA, Calif. (AP) — One home went up in flames and several others were threatened by a brush fire burning in heavy vegetation in a rural section of Riverside County.

CalFire spokesman Phil Rawlings says Wednesday's fire has burned 400 acres and was 50 percent contained, with full containment expected by Thursday morning.

The wildfire broke out about 11:30 a.m. in Murrieta, about 90 miles southeast of Los Angeles.

Rawlings says the fire was caused by barbed wire being pulled into brush-clearing equipment and sending off sparks.

Air tankers, several helicopters and more than 150 firefighters were on the scene to stave off flames creeping toward several large hillside homes. Three firefighters sustained minor injuries.

Television images showed the blaze enveloping one large, two-story home.

There are no reports of evacuations.
