Homeowner injured in armed home invasion robbery

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Detectives worked Thursday to identify and track down a thief who stole jewelry and fur coats during a residential robbery in La Jolla and fired several rifle shots before fleeing, superficially wounding a 76-year-old man who lives in the home.

A real estate agent had just shown the house in the 7400 block of Hillside Drive to a potential buyer and was locking up about 6:15 p.m. Wednesday when a man confronted her and demanded she go back inside with him and lead him to where the jewelry was kept, according to San Diego police.

The woman explained who she was and told the man she didn't know where the residents stored their valuables, SDPD Officer David Stafford said. The man then searched and ransacked the residence, after which he told the agent to stay inside and left.

As he walked outside, the thief encountered a resident of the home returning from an outing. The suspect went to a parked black Porsche, grabbed a rifle and fired two or three rounds into the ground before getting into the car and driving off.

During the shooting, the resident was struck in the face, apparently by a piece of bullet shrapnel, Lt. Andra Brown said. He was treated at a hospital for a minor cut near one of his eyes and released.

The suspect was described as a white, bespectacled, blond-haired man who appeared to be in his late 30s or early 40s, police said.
