"Reduce Your Use" promotion continues for third day

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Gas & Electric will extend its "Reduce Your Use" promotion for a third day Saturday, because of continued hot weather.

In the program, customers who cut back on power between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. get 75 cents off their bill for every kilowatt-hour saved. The utility calculates a customer's power reduction by comparing it to usage in five similar days in the past, according to Allison Zaragoza of SDG&E.

One kilowatt-hour in savings is roughly equivalent to getting a couple of loads of laundry done, Zaragoza said.

With highs forecast to be in the 90s around most of San Diego County, the utility started the effort Thursday for the first time and continued it on Friday. The California Independent System Operator, which manages the state power grid, issued for Thursday and Friday a "Flex Alert," which is aimed at getting people to wait until off-peak hours to run appliance that consume large

amounts of electricity.

The "Flex Alert," initially issued through the weekend, was canceled Friday based on a forecast cooling trend. Highs should be a couple of degrees cooler Saturday than Friday, then a couple more degrees cooler on Sunday.

Customers can sign up for the electricity-saving plan at sdge.com. The utility sends out "Reduce Your Use" email alerts on days when savings plan is in effect.
