1,800 property tax refunds to be sent out

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Declining property values prompted the county of San Diego to send out nearly 1,800 property tax refunds this week, Treasurer-Tax Collecter Dan McAllister said.

McAllister said the negative reassessments are the result of sales, in which the value of the affected properties is deemed to be lower than before.

The checks mailed out this week are among more than 18,500 refunds totaling nearly $10.6 million that have been issued during this calendar year because of reduced assessments, he said. The refunds are sent out in batches.

McAllister said the combined amount of the current mailing is estimated to be almost $1.2 million. The average refund is $672, with the highest being almost $92,000 and the lowest around $10.

The county offers a hotline for property owners who believe they are due a refund, at (619) 531-5813.
