A group that includes former Los Angeles Dodgers owner Peter O'Malley and pro golfer Phil Mickelson reached agreement Monday to buy the San Diego Padres from John Moores in a deal believed to be around $800 million.

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Major League Baseball owners could vote Thursday on the proposed sale of the San Diego Padres.

If the $800 million deal is given the green light by 22 of the 30 owners, control of the Padres would switch from John Moores to members of the O'Malley family, which is well-liked in baseball circles for its former ownership of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The vote would come at the conclusion of two days of meetings that began Wednesday in Denver. Baseball officials generally don't announce their actions until the end of their gathering.

However, veteran baseball reporter and mlb.com writer Barry Bloom reported that a presentation on the deal "sailed" through an ownership committee meeting, and that Commissioner Bud Selig confirmed a vote would take place Thursday.

This is Moores' second attempt to unload the team this year. Jeff Moorad, who led a group that agreed to buy the franchise in installments beginning in 2009, dropped his bid in the face of opposition by owners to his taking majority control.

The prospective new owners include ex-Dodger owner Peter O'Malley, his sons Kevin and Brian, nephews Peter Seidler and Tom Seidler, and golf star Phil Mickelson, who grew up in San Diego as a Padres fan. Several minority owners, including local businessman Ron Fowler, are also involved.

The purchase would include the Padres and minority stakes in Petco Park and the Fox Sports San Diego cable channel. One-fourth of the sales price being paid to Moores is upfront broadcast rights fees from FS San Diego, according to news reports.

Kevin O'Malley and Tom Seidler, who own the minor league Visalia Rawhide -- a single-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks -- are expected to run the day-to-day operations of the Padres if the sale is approved, U-T San Diego reported last week.
