Neil Armstrong was a quiet self-described nerdy engineer who became a global hero when as a steely-nerved pilot he made "one giant leap for mankind" with a small step on to the moon. The modest man who had people on Earth entranced and awed from almost a quarter million miles away has died.

San Diego (CBS 8) -  The death of astronaut Neil Armstrong, 82, resonated in the San Diego area Saturday. The former astronaut, was best known for being the first man to walk on the moon.

One local man reflects on the close friendship he shared with Armstrong.

Chuck Friedlander, a former co-worker and close friend, says while he considered Armstrong the best pilot in the world, Armstrong was very private considering his achievements.

And that's one of the many qualities he says that made Armstrong such an inspiration.

In this video report, News 8's Shannon Handy speaks with Friedlander, as he remembers the American hero.
