VISTA (CNS) - A young man who robbed and raped the lone clerk at a small grocery store in Escondido and escaped in her SUV, then hours later tried to hold up two other women outside a check-cashing business, was sentenced Monday to more than 75 years to life in state prison.
Hugo Elmer Garcia, 20, was convicted in May of nine felony counts, including kidnapping, rape, sex with a foreign object and armed robbery. He was acquitted of burglary and possession of a stolen firearm.
The rape and robbery took place on May 18, 2011, at the Family Accessories store on East Valley Parkway.
The defendant displayed a gun to the clerk, took money from the register, then forced her into a store bathroom, where he raped her, authorities said.
Garcia, who had ridden to the store on a bicycle, stole the victim's SUV, then four hours later tried to hold up two female employees leaving a check-cashing business on East Grand Avenue, according to police.
He was arrested in the area a short time later by officers responding to a report about the attempted robbery.
