SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - In a News 8 exclusive, the father of two young girls who survived a horrific crash in the North County takes us inside the hospital where the girls are recovering from their injuries.
Six-year-old Audrey Aguilar is being treated at Rady Children's Hospital for a major spinal cord injury.
Her father, Gerardo, says she has a fighting spirit and is making great strides. Doctors say her breathing tube will be removed soon.
Meantime, her sister, 13-year-old Irene, is recovering from several broken bones.
On Tuesday, the girls' mother, Mary Helen and their two sisters, Camyrn and Jennifer, were killed after a car slammed head-on into their minivan on state route 78 near Santa Ysabel.
The CHP is still investigating which driver crossed the double yellow line, but say most of the wreckage was in the minivan's lane.
The funeral for Camryn, Jennifer, and their mother is next Sunday.
A memorial fund has been set up to help with funeral costs, and mounting hospital bills.
