SAN DIEGO (CNS) - More than 1,000 incoming freshmen and nearly 400 transferring students are scheduled to begin classes at the University of San Diego Wednesday.

USD is the third of San Diego's major universities to open its fall semester, following San Diego State and Cal State San Marcos, which started last week.

The freshman class at the private Roman Catholic university includes 1,080 students, and there will be 375 transfers, according to USD.

The undergraduate student population will be about 5,100. Total enrollment, including graduate and law students, is generally around 8,000, according to the USD website.

Students began moving into dormitories at the Alcala Park campus over Labor Day weekend and concluded their "Torero Days" with a new student convocation at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

UC San Diego classes begin on Sept. 24.
