Cigarette butt receptacles installed in North Park, La Mesa

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Volunteers from I Love a Clean San Diego and the Surfrider Foundation have installed cigarette butt receptacles in North Park and La Mesa.

Eighteen ash cans were installed in business districts along University Avenue and La Mesa Boulevard.

The groups say they'll help keep roughly 7,000 cigarette butts from reaching the ocean each month.

"A lot of smokers don't realize when they throw a cigarette butt on the ground that it adds up in the negative impact it has. In fact, cigarette butts, once they get wet, release toxins in the environment that can kill marine life and wildlife in general," Roger Kube of the Surfrider Foundation said.

The groups have previously installed ash cans in La Jolla, Point Loma, Pacific Beach and at local state parks.
