SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A young man killed in a fireworks accident was honored "surfer style." Friends and family showed their love for 20-year-old Willie Calabrese with a paddle out in La Jolla Sunday.
He suffered major burns while preparing fireworks for the Padres' minor league baseball game in Lake Elsinore last week, and died a few days later.
Just before sunset on Sunday, loved ones paddled out to remember him. They say he was an avid swimmer and had a love for life.
Willie lived in Pacific Beach, and graduated from La Jolla High School in 2010.
