SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Nearly a dozen teens were taken away in ambulances Saturday during a cross country race.

Saturday's scorching temperatures sent the runners to the hospital with heat related injuries. The teens were taking part in the 68th Annual San Diego State Aztec Invitational.

This event was put on by San Diego State. About 2500 kids from all over the western states participated.

According to organizers, there has never been so many injuries due to extreme heat in its 30 year history.
