Caltrans seeks nearly $75K in highway safety suit

SAN DIEGO (AP) - California's Department of Transportation is seeking nearly $75,000 from a family of a woman killed in a crash three years ago who sued the agency over what they claim was unsafe highway conditions.

U-T San Diego reports Caltrans wants $73,802 to cover its legal bills in defending a lawsuit filed by the family of Alexandria Drake. The 25-year-old woman was killed in 2009 when a speeding car crossed over the center line of Route 67 and slammed into her vehicle.

Her family sued Caltrans, arguing the agency knew the highway was dangerous and hadn't done enough to make it safer for motorists.

A jury in June found in favor of Caltrans. The family pledged to drop any appeal if Caltrans didn't seek the money, but the offer was rejected.
