Chargers hand out 1,000 pairs of shoes to kids in need

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Several Chargers players spent the day helping hundreds of school children in need pick out some new shoes.

The Chargers gave away 1,000 pairs of shoes as part of its annual back-to-school event with Payless Shoe Source. The children also got some one-on-one time with the players.

"You see us with the name on the back of our jerseys and the helmet on. Now you get to see the person themselves and get to know them and know somebody they're watching," wide receiver Michael Spurlock said.

"School is such an important part of life, especially the platform where I'm at, the NFL, and its such a dream for me so to give back to these kids. It's such a blessing," wide receiver Chris Owusu said.

The children are in grades K-6, and were chosen to participate by their school district.
