Park dedication in honor of local couple

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Mayor Jerry Sanders and other civic leaders dedicated a 3.3-acre park Thursday. The park is just north of Seaport Village.

Ruocco Park, which is on the site of the former Harbor Seafood Mart on the southwest corner of West Harbor Drive and Pacific Highway, is the 18th park along the waterfront, according to the port.

The space includes benches, picnic tables, trees and a plaza for events -- along with a sculpture by local artist Roman de Salvo at the entrance.

The park was named for Lloyd and Ilse Ruocco. He was a prominent San Diego architect who helped with design work for the County Administration Center, San Diego Civic Theatre and dozens of private homes, and she was an interior designer and art professor at San Diego State University.

According to the port, the couple established a trust 25 years ago for a park that would feature outstanding urban design. The San Diego Foundation administered the funds and awarded $3.5 million for park improvements.

The port added $3.8 million to pay for demolition and construction.
