The Dish with Anita: Easy apple tart

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - This is one of those almost fail-proof recipes that can be made in a pinch, and that will have everyone thinking you are a pastry genius!

This recipe is also very versatile in that you can use any number of different fruits like peaches, pears, plums or mixed berries with the same tasty results. This tart can be served warm or room temperature, topped with fresh whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream. It's a perfect way to end your meal, Enjoy!


6 good size Granny Smith apples peeled, cored and sliced

2 tbsp lemon juice

3/4 cup sugar

3 tbsp cornstarch

1/2 tsp salt

1 tbsp apple pie spice

2 tsp real vanilla extract

4 to 6 pats of butter

1 Pillsbury readymade pie crust

10x2 to 12x2-inch cake pan

Parchment paper


Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Spray cake pan with non-stick baking or cooking spray and place parchment paper in bottom of pan. Remove pie crust from fridge and let it come to room temperature.

Place apple slices in large mixing bowl, toss with lemon juice to coat and set aside.

In a small mixing bowl whisk together the sugar, cornstarch, salt and apple pie spice. Combine the sugar mixture with the apples and toss, making sure everything is combined. Arrange apple slices in the bottom of the cake pan in a pretty pattern.

There will be juices left in the bowl; add the vanilla extract to the juices then pour over the arranged apple slices. Unroll the pie crust and place over the apple slices. Use a spatula to tuck in the edges down the sides of the pan. Place on a baking sheet and place in 350 degree preheated oven. Bake for 55 minutes or until done.

Remove and let cool on a rack for 20 minutes or more. Place a large plate or platter over pan and carefully flip over onto plate. Remove parchment paper and serve warm with whipped cream or ice cream.
