SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman was seriously burned by sulphuric acid -- used in drain cleaner -- as she walked into a laundromat east of downtown, and a man seen creating a disturbance nearby was arrested for the attack, San Diego police said.
The woman spotted a man -- later identified as Arturo Jose Reyes -- sitting in a dark blue BMW as she was walking into the business on 25th St. near Broadway shortly before 6 a.m., said San Diego police Officer Frank Cali.
The man confronted her as she was leaving and threw a liquid substance at her, which landed on her arm and back, Cali said.
Cali said arriving officers spotted Reyes causing a disturbance at a nearby gas station. The victim identified him as having thrown the chemicals on her, and Reyes was arrested for suspicion of assault with a caustic chemical, Cali said.
The victim was taken to a hospital to be treated for second-degree burns, he said. Her name was not released, nor was the motive for the attack.
A Hazmat unit was called in to analyze the substance and decontaminate the area, Cali said.
