SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The U.S. Coast Guard captured 21 suspected undocumented immigrants aboard a crowded skiff in the ocean west of Point Loma Friday.
An occupant of another fishing boat in the area contacted the federal maritime agency shortly before 10 a.m. to report spotting the suspicious northbound vessel about 12 miles offshore, according to USCG public affairs.
The Coast Guard launched a 33-foot law enforcement boat from its San Diego station and diverted the cutter Haddock to intercept the 25-foot suspected smuggling vessel.
The cutter crew located and detained the migrants, brought them to shore and turned them to over to the U.S. Border Patrol. They were expected to be deported, barring any legal entanglements in the United States.
