Kaiser sets flu shot record

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Kaiser Permanente set a world record Saturday for most flu vaccinations given in an eight-hour period.

Four Kaiser locations in San Diego joined with 36 other locations around southern California for the "Super Saturday Flu Clinic."

It's estimated Kaiser gave out 30,000 flu shots Saturday, beating the previous world record of 12,000.

While a flu shot can protect you from illness, it can also help your loved ones.

Doctors recommend the flu shot for anyone over 6 months old, but it is strongly suggested for certain high risk groups, including pregnant women and people over 65.

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Kaiser Permanente in San Diego and around Southern California is aiming for a world record Saturday for the most flu vaccinations to be given in an eight-hour period.

The Super Saturday Flu Clinic will take place at 40 Kaiser locations around the region, including four in San Diego County.

About 30,000 Kaiser members are signed up to get flu shots Saturday, according to spokeswoman Mina Nicoletti. They're looking to top the current record of 12,000, she said.

A representative of Guinness World Records is set to be at a Kaiser medical building in Grantville to certify the record. Nicoletti said Kaiser Permanent offices in La Mesa, Otay Mesa and San Marcos are also participating.

"The flu shot is the first and most important step to protect ourselves against the flu," said Dr. Paul Bernstein, area medical director for Kaiser Permanente San Diego. "We know prevention saves lives so getting our members vaccinated is a great investment in the total health of ourselves, our members and all San Diegans."

While medical professionals recommend the flu shot for anyone over 6 months, it is strongly suggested for certain groups at higher risk. Those include children under 5 years old, adults ages 65 and older, pregnant women, and those with long-term medical conditions like asthma, diabetes, blood disorders and lung disease, according to Kaiser.
