SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Detective Ali Perez was nearly killed during a shootout with a suspected child molester in Lakeside this week.
His road to recovery will be a long one.
And while he'll get his base pay, he will no longer be getting any overtime pay, and his wife will be taking time off work to help him recover.
So the community is rallying to make sure the family will be able to pay their mortgage, and college tuition bills.
Sunday, Pernicano's Family Restaurant at Broadway and East Main St. in El Cajon will turn into a benefit/music festival with live bands and raffle prizes.
All proceeds will help the Perez family as detective Ali Perez continues to fight for his life after this week's shooting in Lakeside.
The benefit runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The goal is to raise $100,000.
