DUI suspect arrested after dangerous, hour-long pursuit

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who allegedly led police on a wild road chase through downtown San Diego and into the South Bay Thursday was arrested after bailing out of his pickup truck and making a failed attempt to escape on foot.

Jose Cruz Guzman, 34, allegedly got into a hit-and-run crash at Ash Street and First Avenue in the Core-Columbia district of San Diego shortly before 12:30 a.m., then sped off when a patrol officer investigating the accident tried to pull him over nearby.

The fleeing motorist crisscrossed over various streets near San Diego Bay, speeding, swerving, driving the wrong direction on one-way roads, steering directly toward officers and gesturing at them in a "taunting" manner, SDPD public-affairs Lt. Andra Brown said.

After several minutes, a sergeant called off the pursuit for safety reasons, according to Brown.

About a half-hour later, a patrol officer saw the same gray Nissan truck heading north at high speed on Fourth Avenue, near F Street in Chula Vista and gave chase, CVPD Capt. Gary Wedge said.

Once again, the driver led police back and fourth through the western side of the South Bay city, at times on Interstate 5, according to Wedge. At one point, Guzman swerved across several lanes on the freeway and sideswiped a car, apparently on purpose, the captain alleged.

After about 20 minutes, the fleeing motorist finally jumped out of the moving pickup at Glover Avenue and Mankato Street and ran off as it crashed into a trash can and rolled to a stop.

Within two minutes, a police lieutenant had the suspect under arrest at gunpoint, Wedge said.

Guzman was booked into county jail on suspicion of a slate of charges, including evading arrest, driving while intoxicated and vehicular assault.
