Donors line up to give blood in honor of injured deputy

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - There was an outpouring of community support Monday, October 8 for a sheriff's deputy who was shot in the line of duty. In fact, so many people showed up at the Save a Hero Blood Drive in Santee that organizers had to steer people to other donation sites.

Moses Moreno is Ali's brother-in-law and remembers him as a "really neat guy."

"Really cool guy, usually say that when something happens, but he's a very nice, good person," he added.

It happened September 25 in Lakeside. Sheriff's Detective Ali Perez was trying to arrest a man suspected of having child pornography, when the suspect opened fire, hitting Detective Perez, who almost died from his injuries.

Detective Perez has needed more than180 pints of blood, so friends came up with an idea to replenish the blood bank's supply in his honor.

Mike Madrano, a retired law enforcement officer, showed up 30 minutes before the drive started to make sure he could participate.

"Once you've been in law enforcement, it never leaves you and when you hear someone else go down, you got to do what ever it takes to help him out," said Madrano.

The blood bank says most of the people that attended are first timers – people they hope will become regular donors.
