Firefighters highlight "Change Your Clock, Change Your Batteries"

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - October is National Fire Prevention Month and the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department is reminding everyone to change the batteries in your smoke detectors.

Firefighters are holding an open house at Fire Station 12 in Lincoln Park Friday to teach people about the "Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery" program.

The program encourages people to change the batteries in their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors when they set their clocks back on November 4. Fire officials say having a working smoke detector is very important, but there are other things you should be doing to protect your family from fire.

"We talk about the smoke detector, and then the other way is having an escape route that kids and parents can work on together so that when there is an emergency they have two different ways to get out," Capt. Cory Beckwith said.

Fire Station 12's open house runs until 7 p.m. Friday.
