Woman runs over, kills boyfriend after fight escalates

CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A drunken man smashed his girlfriend's car window with a rock, and was run over and killed as she tried to escape him in a Chula Vista parking lot Sunday.

Chula Vista Police Lt. Eric Thunberg said a call came in at 5:23 a.m. of a fight in the 1000 block of Third Ave.

Thunberg said when officers arrived they found a man dead in the parking lot. He had been struck by a vehicle driven by a woman following some sort of altercation..

"The deceased had picked up a rock and smashed her windshield and started banging on her car," Thunberg said. "She was fearful of him and was trying to back away and, in so doing, she ended up striking him and knocking him down."

Thunberg said the man suffered major head trauma. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Chula Vista Fire Department.

Thunberg said the woman involved had not been drinking alcohol before the death and was cooperative with police in their investigation. He said the he deceased man had been drinking.

The dead man's name was held pending notification of next of kin. But police said he and the woman had a child together.
