Driver involved in hit-and-run, carjacking in custody

Posted: Updated:

ENCANTO (CNS) - A 65-year-old suspect in an alleged felony hit-and-run and carjacking on Highway 94 Saturday was in custody Sunday.

At 7:23 p.m., motorists reported that a Ford Mustang was being driven the wrong-way on Highway 94 at Federal Boulevard and had collided with two different vehicles, said Officer John Alvarez of the California Highway Patrol.

Alvarez said the Mustang became disabled following the collisions, and that he ran away from the vehicle disappearing onto surface streets.

Shortly thereafter, Officer Dino Delimitros said San Diego Police received a call from a woman who had just been carjacked by a male, armed with a screwdriver and matching the hit-and-run suspect's description.

"The suspect forced the carjacking victim to drive him two blocks south," Delimitros said. "He exited the car and was found hiding under a parked truck."

Delimitros said the suspect was taken into custody and charged with felony hit-and-run and carjacking.

Six family members in the SUV which had been struck by the hit-and-run driver were taken by ambulance to a hospital, but none of them were seriously injured, the CHP said.

If you've ever been stuck sitting in traffic, you've probably seen motorcyclists cutting through lanes and whizzing by. It's a move called lane-splitting, and while it's potentially dangerous, it's perfectly legal.
