ESCONDIDO (CNS) - A man who reportedly was seen carrying a rifle in a North County neighborhood Wednesday holed up inside a home in the area when police arrived to investigate, prompting a several-hour SWAT standoff that ended with his surrender.
Patrol personnel went to the house at Fifth Avenue and Spruce Street in Escondido to contact the suspect shortly before 9:30 a.m., Lt. Chris Wynn said.
Two other men in the residence near Westside Park complied with officers' directions come out, but the one believed to be armed with a gun remained inside, according to Wynn.
A special weapons and tactics squad was summoned in the late morning to take up positions around the home as police continued trying to get the suspect to give himself up.
About 1 p.m., the man surrendered and was taken into custody for questioning, Sgt. Mike Kearney. The suspect's name was not immediately available.
Officers were awaiting a warrant to enter and search the house, the sergeant said.
